Clear and flawless enough to rate a ``D`` on the diamond scale for colour. Also available in virtually all colours. Lighter coloured stones, such as pink and purple, sometimes have small colour variations.
Originally invented as an alternative to diamonds, today cubic zirconia is treasured in its own right. Its fabulous sparkle has made it a contemporary favourite and most widely used stone.
Man-made stones do not replace natural stones. However the advantage of man-made stones is that they are more affordable.
A synthetic stone is made in the laboratory but virtually identical (in chemical, optical, and physical characteristics) to its natural counterpart. Unlike natural stones, synthetic stones can be “made to order”.
Synthetic stones have been produced since the 1800s. The two main methods are a melt process (flame fusion) and a solution process.
Cubic zirconia is easy to care for and requires little effort to maintain. Avoid rough handling and store items of jewellery separately to avoid scratches. Wash gently in lukewarm soapy water.
